I have read so many great books on periods, menstruation, hormones and cycle charting, it is really difficult to pick a short list, so I will be doing some proper reviews, however, one thing I am asked regularly is "What Books Do You Recommend?" to learn more about women's health, periods and the reproductive system in general.

This can be a difficult one because, whilst you can look things up on the internet, the looking at things from a scientific view point only can take us into our head and h...

I love Disney films, yes I know, I know.  But the Lion King? Who'd have thought you'd get me to love Shakespeare, add in a load of animals singing Elton John works....amazing.  Ever wondered what would happen if Disney did a film about menstruation? I would imagine it would be very much like the earlier films with singing birds helping the young maiden with the housework, but I was very wrong.

So, in honour or our sex ed days, if you can remember back to your school days, probably with an in...

I often tell people that PMS is a sign that something is wrong.  It may be common but it is not normal.  I wrote a post on PMS a few years ago from the point of view of nutritional help, but essential oils have been a wonderful resource in my tool box for PMS for many years.  Even better is that there is now some research on these oils.

1.  Geranium Essential Oil Pelargonium graveolens / Pelargonium asperum

This oil is from the leaves of the geranium plant and has a sweet floral sme...

One of my favourite therapies that I have been practising for years is essential oils and they are now suddenly fashionable in the wellness world.  Whilst these power plant medicines can have some incredible effects on your health and wellbeing, I always like to mention first, that they are not a substitute for good quality nutrition and a healthy balanced lifestyle.

That being said there is a lot that they can be used for including as first aid for period pain.  Unfortunately, research in essent...

Anyone who has spoken to me about their cycle, will have had me wax lyrical about cervical fluid at some point.  It is a pretty special substance that not only aids fertility in multiple ways, but can also also tell you so much about your menstrual health.

For me, it is an essential part of my charting practice and it is something I recommend to most of my clients.  If you're on this post, the chances are you already chart your cervical fluid or you are at least attempting to.  It can be difficul...

I often get asked variations of, "can I have periods if I'm not ovulating?" or, "I have regular periods so I must be ovulating" or "I have regular periods so I must be fertile" and I have been asked to help clear this up.

I did a post a few years ago on what qualifies as a period, but one of the key definitions of a menstrual period is that it occurs after an ovulation.  So, the short answer is, if you are not ovulating, you are not having periods.

But as with all things, this is a bit...

Ever have days when you bleed through everything and it feels like you period is never going to stop? Heavy periods, or menorrhoea is no joke.  I have experienced it personally as a teen (I even wore a tampon and a night pad and still bled through within half an hour), was put on various forms of the pill, mini pill, the IUD, the implant.  You name it I was on it.  But nothing ever worked and I was made to feel like it was my fault that my periods didn’t know how to respond, like I was the probl...

One really common question I hear is, I know I am not pregnant, so why is my period late?  There are a number of reasons why this might be and to get to the bottom of them, you need to know, when you ovulated and how long your luteal phase (the number of days between ovulation and the start of your period) usually is.

You can check out my posts on how to tell whether you are ovulating here.

So let's say you have ovulated and your luteal phase is hitting 3 days or longer than it usually is, and you...

Do you ever get tired shortly after eating?  Maybe you need that midmorning snack or 3.30 pick me up to get through the day?

Perhaps you have been diagnosed with PCOS, Insulin resistance, pre-diabetes or even type 2 diabetes (or suspect you have them).  Maybe you have irregular cycles, don't ovulate regularly, struggle to lose weight around the middle, have facial hair or thinning hair around your parting or the top of your scalp (so unfair, right)?

What makes it worse is when you end up beat...

One question I'm regularly asked by my private clients is "my period is 22 days/56 days what can I do?".  You can pretty much insert any number of days into that question, it still won't change my response which is: are you ovulating and when?

Ovulation is pretty awesome.  Not only does it enable us to get pregnant (if we want to) but it helps with so many other important things, stabilising our mood after the drop in oestrogen, nourishing our thyroid, bone health, heart health and breast he...

Your period has been AWOL for a while and you really just feel that you want a period but it isn't coming.  You know you don't have an underlying reason for this such as pregnancy, post partum, menopause, the pill, medications or illness.  So what is a girl to do?

There are a number of reasons you may not be having periods, so it is hard to right a catch all blog post, however, there are some thing that you can start to get your body in a better position (and may just bring your period back)...

It can take quite a while for your cycle to return at all after coming off the pill and it can also take a while for your cycle to resemble something in the normal healthy range too. However, if it's been a year (or you'd like to give your body a helping hand), then this blog is for you.

One of the things the pill does is increase something called Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, let's call it SHBG, which does exactly what it says on the tin; binds up excess sex hormones so they no longer have effec...

So many women come to me feeling that they are hypothyroid, they will have read up on the symptoms, but they don't actually know how the thyroid works so even if they get a doctor willing to do all the tests, they won't understand the results and what the tests are looking for.  So this post is for anyone wanting to understand what the heck their thyroid is and why it is so important to our health and well being.

Hopefully before you started reading this your spotted the di...

Painful or heavy periods is the bane of most of my clients, and many of them are quite period literate: they have managed their stress, they are off the pill, they are eating healthy foods, lowering their inflammation and working on their oestrogen dominance, and yet they are still having mysterious issues causing period problems and in this case, I will ask them to consider that their thyroid is causing the issue.

Unfortunately, when I often refer women out to get their thyroid tested as they sh...

Ever thought your period was well, switched to your pretty undies only to get random spotting at an odd point in your cycle?  You are not alone, many women have spotting, but the key is to know whether you should be worried or not.

Spotting can be benign, and even a good sign but there are times when you want to investigate it further.  Here is the complete guide:

Spotting Before Your Period

This is when you get that odd spot in your knickers throughout the few days leading up to the period.  Often...
