I often tell people that PMS is a sign that something is wrong.  It may be common but it is not normal.  I wrote a post on PMS a few years ago from the point of view of nutritional help, but essential oils have been a wonderful resource in my tool box for PMS for many years.  Even better is that there is now some research on these oils.

1.  Geranium Essential Oil Pelargonium graveolens / Pelargonium asperum

This oil is from the leaves of the geranium plant and has a sweet floral sme...

As an aromatherapist, I am so glad that essential oils have been making it big in the health and wellness industry news over the last few years.  I have been using them for years to help women with period problems and they are an essential part of my practice.  It feels great to no longer be an outlier when using these beautiful additions to my tool box.

I do however, get tagged in lots of debates, heated discussions on essential oil safety.  I used to give blanket statements but people don'...

One of my favourite therapies that I have been practising for years is essential oils and they are now suddenly fashionable in the wellness world.  Whilst these power plant medicines can have some incredible effects on your health and wellbeing, I always like to mention first, that they are not a substitute for good quality nutrition and a healthy balanced lifestyle.

That being said there is a lot that they can be used for including as first aid for period pain.  Unfortunately, research in essent...

Anyone who has spoken to me about their cycle, will have had me wax lyrical about cervical fluid at some point.  It is a pretty special substance that not only aids fertility in multiple ways, but can also also tell you so much about your menstrual health.

For me, it is an essential part of my charting practice and it is something I recommend to most of my clients.  If you're on this post, the chances are you already chart your cervical fluid or you are at least attempting to.  It can be difficul...

I don't know about your but I love essential oils and as someone who has been practising aromatherapy for nearly 20 years, I love to take an essential oil first aid kit with me wherever I go.  However, if like me you are choosing between oils and your holiday first aid packing looks like this, then I've got you covered.

As aromatherapy and essential oils are now back in fashion, I thought I would share the ones I think are essential for a summer holiday.

I appreciate that essential oils can be ex...

I rarely write posts that could be deemed political but in today's climate I feel that it is so important that we celebrate women around us.  In a time when apparently there is an approximately 20% wage gap between men and women in the UK (and in other parts of the world), a time where women do more unpaid work than men (both employment and domestic responsibilities) and a world in which women are coming to practitioners such as myself because they feel they no longer have choices in what happen...

Regular thyroid on the left and an enlarged thyroid on the right.  Image from Shutterstock.

When you feel fuzzy, depressed, struggling to control your mood, tired, cold and gaining weight easily, the chances are that you are aware it might be a good thing to get your thyroid tested.  So you make an appointment, rattle of the list of symptoms to the doctor, they agree to test your thyroid and you feel great.  You are going to get your answer soon, the end is near and soon you will...

The journey through pre-menopause, peri-menopause and menopause itself can be incredibly disorientating.  Everything turns on its head, you no longer relate to the world as you know it and women often ask me if what they are going through is normal.

However, menopause isn't just something that happens to us, it is a process of transformation which, once we have accepted, can help us to create a life we really want for ourselves and our families.  It can be an opportunity to really review what it...

One of the many questions I get asked on a regular basis is: is the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM)/Natural Family Planning(NFP)/any other sympto-thermal charting method right for me?  Or perhaps they think it is but aren't feeling 100% sure of their choice.

To start this post off, I am going to say: THERE IS NO ONE CONTRACEPTIVE METHOD THAT IS PERFECT OR THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE.  THERE IS ONLY THE METHOD THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU.

With an additional caveat of you being both you as an individual and...

Please note: I'm British so I spell oestrogen the British way, but I am referring to Oestrogen interchangeably with Estrogen.

Lack of sex drive, not feeling your usual vibrant self?  Low oestrogen isn't as common as high oestrogen or oestrogen dominance, but more women are coming to me with issues for low oestrogen:

  • Wrinkles and saggy skin

  • Achy joints

  • Vaginal dryness, irritation or loss of feeling

  • Feeling dry (both vaginally and elsewhere such as skin and eyes)

  • Low libido

I don't know about you, but whenever I have been trying to consider my healthcare options, whether in the standard medical paradigm or in the complementary field, there are often overwhelming amounts of information to take in.

And as for making a decision about the best option for you, sometimes, you feel put on the spot and are expected to agree or consent to treatment straight away.  In some cases, all this information comes on the back of a shock diagnosis or wasn't expected and you just need...

One thing that many of my clients get nervous about is seeing their primary care provider for a hormonal or women's health condition.  Sometimes, when it comes to our periods, we are understandably embarrassed about speaking to our doctors, and sometimes we have had negative experiences that put us off seeking help.

Here are a few things that you can do in advance to help you along.

1. Research Your Doctor And Shop Around

I have had to move GP surgeries a few times until I found a doctor that I fel...

One thing many fertility clients keep asking me is what is the most important thing that they can do before actively trying to conceive a child and my answer is always the same: take time to do some pre-conception preparation.

This is simply taking some time before actively trying to conceive to get your health into top shape.  It can help your journey in a number of ways:

  • Getting both partners physical health and reproductive health into its optimal state both so that there are less issues wi...

When I originally wrote this post, it was with the aim of helping women who have emotions at the root cause of their period, or even lack of period problems and whilst that is still the case, I feel that I also have to acknowledge and reflect that there are a number of events over the recent months that have left the world stunned.  So many people  are in a state of shock and needing to heal as well as those who are dealing with their own health issues.

One of my favourite techniques, Emotio...

One of the things many of my clients do every morning is chart their basal body temperature (BBT) because charting your cycle can give me huge clues to your hormonal health.  BBT charting can be used on its own or as part of one of the Sympto-Thermal Methods (STM) of either Natural Family Planning (NFP) or Fertility Awareness Method (FAM).

If these terms are new to you, these methods are used to achieve or avoid pregnancy using evidence based, scientifically proven methods of measuring vario...
