Anyone who has spoken to me about their cycle, will have had me wax lyrical about cervical fluid at some point.  It is a pretty special substance that not only aids fertility in multiple ways, but can also also tell you so much about your menstrual health.

For me, it is an essential part of my charting practice and it is something I recommend to most of my clients.  If you're on this post, the chances are you already chart your cervical fluid or you are at least attempting to.  It can be difficul...

I often get asked variations of, "can I have periods if I'm not ovulating?" or, "I have regular periods so I must be ovulating" or "I have regular periods so I must be fertile" and I have been asked to help clear this up.

I did a post a few years ago on what qualifies as a period, but one of the key definitions of a menstrual period is that it occurs after an ovulation.  So, the short answer is, if you are not ovulating, you are not having periods.

But as with all things, this is a bit...

One really common question I hear is, I know I am not pregnant, so why is my period late?  There are a number of reasons why this might be and to get to the bottom of them, you need to know, when you ovulated and how long your luteal phase (the number of days between ovulation and the start of your period) usually is.

You can check out my posts on how to tell whether you are ovulating here.

So let's say you have ovulated and your luteal phase is hitting 3 days or longer than it usually is, and you...

As someone who works with women with period problems and who spent thousand of hours learning to become a Natural Family Planning and Fertility Awareness Educator, I am always keen to research different charting methods.

I love the different things that they tell you about your cycle and in all honesty, in many cases, a client who comes in with a few months of charts can give me more to go on, than with tests that may or may not have been done at the right time of the month to be meaningful.

Until...

One of the things many fertility clients come to me with is "why am I not getting pregnant when I am trying around/after I have ovulated?".  They are so upset and frustrated and feel that their body has let them down.  Assuming these women have no underlying conditions or hormonal imbalances, what else can they do?

Well, it may surprise you to know that there is an optimal window for trying to conceive, but not always when you think.  Many women assume it is between ovulation and menstruatio...

One question I'm regularly asked by my private clients is "my period is 22 days/56 days what can I do?".  You can pretty much insert any number of days into that question, it still won't change my response which is: are you ovulating and when?

Ovulation is pretty awesome.  Not only does it enable us to get pregnant (if we want to) but it helps with so many other important things, stabilising our mood after the drop in oestrogen, nourishing our thyroid, bone health, heart health and breast he...

Your period has been AWOL for a while and you really just feel that you want a period but it isn't coming.  You know you don't have an underlying reason for this such as pregnancy, post partum, menopause, the pill, medications or illness.  So what is a girl to do?

There are a number of reasons you may not be having periods, so it is hard to right a catch all blog post, however, there are some thing that you can start to get your body in a better position (and may just bring your period back)...

Painful or heavy periods is the bane of most of my clients, and many of them are quite period literate: they have managed their stress, they are off the pill, they are eating healthy foods, lowering their inflammation and working on their oestrogen dominance, and yet they are still having mysterious issues causing period problems and in this case, I will ask them to consider that their thyroid is causing the issue.

Unfortunately, when I often refer women out to get their thyroid tested as they sh...

Do you remember having Sex Ed at school and you were told that you could get pregnant at any time?  Or maybe you had an accident and rushed to get the morning after pill because any unprotected sex pretty much leads to pregnancy, right?

Well if you were told any of the above you may be surprised to know that we are actually only fertile for a few days each month.  If this is shocking news to you, then please do read on as all will be revealed.

Let's Talk About The Menstrual Cycle

I did a post on th...

In my post "Signs That Your Period Needs A Helping Hand" we covered the signs that there is something wrong with your periods.  In this post, we are going to cover what the main causes of period problems are.  You may have one of these or a combination, which is why it can be hard to pinpoint the exact cause or why one protocol may not fix the whole issue.

1.  Times of Stress or Illness

Reproduction and our whole reproductive system is not essential to our survival.  So it makes sense that wh...

One of the many questions I get asked on a regular basis is: is the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM)/Natural Family Planning(NFP)/any other sympto-thermal charting method right for me?  Or perhaps they think it is but aren't feeling 100% sure of their choice.

To start this post off, I am going to say: THERE IS NO ONE CONTRACEPTIVE METHOD THAT IS PERFECT OR THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE.  THERE IS ONLY THE METHOD THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU.

With an additional caveat of you being both you as an individual and...

One thing many fertility clients keep asking me is what is the most important thing that they can do before actively trying to conceive a child and my answer is always the same: take time to do some pre-conception preparation.

This is simply taking some time before actively trying to conceive to get your health into top shape.  It can help your journey in a number of ways:

  • Getting both partners physical health and reproductive health into its optimal state both so that there are less issues wi...

One of the things many of my clients do every morning is chart their basal body temperature (BBT) because charting your cycle can give me huge clues to your hormonal health.  BBT charting can be used on its own or as part of one of the Sympto-Thermal Methods (STM) of either Natural Family Planning (NFP) or Fertility Awareness Method (FAM).

If these terms are new to you, these methods are used to achieve or avoid pregnancy using evidence based, scientifically proven methods of measuring vario...

One thing all my clients want to know more about are their hormones, what they do and their effect on their health, menstrual cycles and fertility.  So I thought I would do a whistle stop tour of your hormones to familiarise you with some of the key ones.  (Note, there are lots more, but I am just going to cover the ones we look at for our cycles and fertility).

Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH):  produced by the pineal gland and stimulates the pituitary to produce Follicle Stimulating H...

It is never too early to start preparing for the menopause (check out this blog post for when to prepare and this one for what the menopause is).  The earlier you start, you can ensure that you are protecting your health in later years.

Here are my top 5 tips on preparing yourself for the transition:

1.  Start charting your cycle

I prefer one of the symptom-thermal methods or charting that I teach such as Natural Family Planning or Fertility Awareness, however, anything that you start tracking such...
